The Ciclovia della Bassa Risicola Vercellese is the perfect itinerary to discover the rice plains along the left bank of the Po river by bike. A territory where rice cultivation has profoundly shaped the landscape, written its history, and marked its economy, also representing a habitat of great naturalistic value. Framing the route, which winds through fields and historic closed-courtyard farmhouses, are the colours of the landscape that change with the seasons: in March the brown of the ploughed fields, in April the blue of the sky reflected in the rice paddies, in May, June, and July the green of the rice, in August and September the yellow of the ripe rice, in October the beige of the straw left on the ground after harvest. The route connects the municipalities of Villanova Monferrato, Rive, Balzola, and Morano sul Po and was created thanks to the "Bici in Comune" (Bikes in the Municipality) call for proposals promoted by the Ministry for Sport and Youth and by Sport e Salute. Villanova Monferrato is a small agricultural village in the province of Alessandria, the northernmost in the province, located on the left bank of the Po. Surrounded by fields and rice paddies, the village still tells the story of the slow rhythm of the Po Valley and its centuries-old vocation for rice cultivation. The Municipality of Villanova Monferrato is also the ideal place to recharge your e-Bike and earn DINAclub points. Cozzo, located in western Lomellina, is a municipality of ancient origins, with Roman roots confirmed by the discovery of a milestone (3rd century AD) and mentions in historical itineraries as a post station between Pavia and Turin. The village, historically known as Cottiae or Cuttiae, was contested in the Middle Ages between the Counts of Lomello and Vercelli, later passing under the rule of Pavia, the Visconti, and finally to the Gallarati-Scotti family.
