Nice landlady, great fried potatoes in the evening and a very rich breakfast in the morning. Accommodation absolutely recommendable.

Anyone walking around the grave will notice that a tree trunk is now growing around the gravestone. A very beautifully maintained gravesite.

Particularly beautiful church which is still built with fieldstone masonry.

The fire hydrant became a symbol through the design of the memorial. Its remains represent the arbitrariness with which SS men and some Kapos beat and tortured the concentration camp prisoners. They used the fire hydrant to mistreat the prisoners: the men were tied to the metal column while soaking wet or had to sit on the cover of the fire hydrant (which is now missing) and remain there. The concentration camp prisoners were subjected to numerous other forms of harassment and punishment.

With completely inadequate supplies and accommodation, the Schwesingen prisoners had to carry out the hardest work in the cold and wet. The subcamp was led by Hans Hermann Griem, an SS lieutenant known for his cruelty, who also commanded the camp in Ladelund. The SS dissolved the camp in Schwesing in December 1944. Due to the inhumane conditions and as a result of mistreatment, more than 300 concentration camp prisoners died here. These dead were buried in mass graves in the Husum Ostfriedhof. For decades, the grave complex inaugurated there in 1957 was the only memorial commemorating the victims of the concentration camp subcamp. https://gedenkstaetten-sh.de/gedenkstaetten/kz-gedenkstaette-husum-schwesing-8
