Tips from the Community

Stenio Melani
July 4, 2026, Porta San Lorenzo (Porta Garibaldi), Bergamo

La Porta San Lorenzo, officially renamed Porta Garibaldi in 1907, is the smallest, oldest, and most rustic of the four monumental gates that open onto the Venetian Walls of Bergamo, included since 2017 in the UNESCO World Heritage. It was built between 1562 and 1563. It takes its name from the ancient church of the same name that stood in the area and which was demolished by the government of the Republic of Venice precisely to make way for the fortifications. On June 8, 1859, Giuseppe Garibaldi, leading his "Cacciatori delle Alpi" volunteers, entered Bergamo through this gateway. He thus liberated the city from Austrian rule. A plaque on the facade commemorates the event. This historical link is the reason why Bergamo is today nicknamed the "City of the Thousand".

A real rarity that you can admire here on Lake Iseo.

The vineyard "Le Matitone" is located in the municipality of Chiuduno, in the province of Bergamo. It is a destination known mainly to local cycle touring and trekking enthusiasts for its aesthetic and panoramic peculiarity. The vineyard is part of the Valcalepio wine production. Although it is private property, its position makes it visible and photographable from the paths that cross the hills of Chiuduno, offering a characteristic view of the Bergamo plain.

always suggestive stretch near Tavernola Bergamasca

The row of trees is beautiful, the trees are majestic, but the road to get there from Sarnico consists of short cycle paths and a provincial (state?) road that is quite narrow and heavily trafficked. Continuing past the trees towards Tavernola, you'll have to pass through a tunnel, about 1km long, which is dark and therefore very dangerous. I recommend avoiding it if your bike isn't equipped with front and rear lights.
