Lake Suviana is the largest artificial basin in the metropolitan city of Bologna and one of the largest in all of Emilia-Romagna. Located at an altitude of about 465 meters in the Bolognese Apennines (in the Limentra Valley), it covers an area of 1.5 km² with a length of 3 km. Created in the early 1930s for hydroelectric purposes, it is today the beating heart of the Suviana and Brasimone Lakes Regional Park and is one of the most beloved destinations for cooling off and playing sports just an hour from Bologna, Florence, and Pistoia.

From Poggio delle Ignude, there is no longer a path that leads directly from the summit to the Portafranca refuge; currently a feat, with a 35% descent on terrain full of unstable debris.
