Tragically, the cathedral was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943, though its greatest treasure—the bronze doors—was saved. After the war, the cathedral was reconstructed in a modern Romanesque style and reconsecrated in 1965, becoming a powerful symbol of the city's resilience where visitors can still see the surviving original façade, the bell tower, and the rescued doors.
