Veroli is one of the richest towns in Ciociaria in history, culture and art. Hernica city with the name of Verulae, later a Roman municipality, had great importance in the Middle Ages as a bishopric. With ups and downs, Veroli was always linked to the Church, even if in 1798 he actively participated in the Jacobin republican movement. There are many monuments that attest to its importance. Of the pre-Roman city there are remains of polygonal walls that surround the Rocca di San Leucio and the forum, the 4th century AD walkway, dates back to Roman times. and the Fasti Verulan (1st century AD), a rare calendar with the commemoration of some events in Roman history. The well-preserved Borgo S. Croce, which is accessed from the door of the same name with the nearby fourteenth-century palace, belongs to the medieval period. Its churches also have medieval origins. Sant’Erasmo is a Romanesque church built on a previous Benedictine monastery, of which it maintains the facade and bell tower; inside, the canvas by Sebastiano Conca (1747) recalls the meeting that took place here between Barbarossa and Pope Alexander III to agree on the Peace of Constance. We stayed in the Monastery of Sant'Erasmo, a sixth century Benedictine monastery finely restored into a widespread hotel. The monks' cells become rooms and the ancient refectory, a restaurant room.
