Monte Scuderi

Highlight • Summit

Monte Scuderi, the magical mountain, full of hidden treasures.
It is said that to reveal (find) the immense treasure hidden at the top of the mountain (the "Trovatura," as these hidden treasures are called in Sicily), one must first catch three fish from the Sea of Ali. They must then be brought "still alive" and on a "handkerchief woven by a virgin" to the top of the mountain. There, they will be cooked, and from them will emerge a huge serpent that will coil three times around the seeker's body. However, the seeker must not be afraid, or he will end up in distant, desolate lands. Once this is done precisely and carefully, a crack will open in the mountain, and upon entering, he will find a hen with seven chicks made of solid gold. Now, I don't know if I've remembered this story correctly, but the fact remains that Monte Scuderi has always represented a magical mountain, full of mystery, for the citizens of the villages below. From its flat summit, a 360° view of the surrounding area is offered. And a cave, visitable where the treasure could actually be found

Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Agrò

Highlight • Religious Site

Near the small village of Casalvecchio Siculo lies in the Torrental Torró a very complex monument of the High Middle Ages in Sicily. The Greek inscription on the architrave of the main portal states that the church was rebuilt by the master builder Gerhard the Frank in 1172 on behalf of the catechumens Theosteriktos. The Norman Roger II had it built in 1116. The church miraculously unites Byzantine, Norman and Arabic architectural elements. until 1776 Greek orthodox Basilian monks lived here in a tiny abbey.
Inside, in the small and narrow church, high pointed arches on monolithic pillars separate three ships from each other. On the main axis of the central nave are the two very different domes, which allow light from above and give the church something mystical. A beautiful place.
I would like to point out to the picnic area below the monastery, where we spent a nice lunch break directly on the Torrente leading in spring water.

A castle is mentioned here for the first time in 1117. The current structure was built during the Norman domination in Sicily. Together with the Forza d'Agrò Castle, which was located higher up on the mountain, it served to guard the coastal road. The castle is now privately owned and unfortunately cannot be visited.

Mount Calvary of Savoca

Highlight • Viewpoint

Savoca is a Normandy fortified town 300 meters above the Strait of Messina. The town is beautifully prepared and touristically developed. Above all, it is worth the view from Calvary to Calabria and the strait. Simply great. There is a Capuchin monastery in the village with a tomb (including mummies) and another three churches, of which the Chiesa Madre is a gem. Otherwise you will find small restaurants and bars with delicious food. We ate delicious Semifreddo near the Capuchin monastery.
The trail from the valley is very steep, the road but freshly tarred and attractive for ambitious cyclists.

October 5, 2025, Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Agrò

A church where you can admire Byzantine, Arab, Sicilian, and Norman architecture. The exterior features exposed brick. The interior columns are made of granite similar to that of the ancient theater in Taormina. They are likely excavated columns from the Byzantine era. The column abacus is made of lava stone.
