The name Burgio comes from the Arabic burg which means "tower". The town was founded by the Arabs who built a military tower that is still visible today. This tower was conquered by the Normans in the 11th century and was actively used by them. Typical are the homemade desserts (cannoli) of Burgio. Characteristics are the hand-painted ceramics with typical yellow and green colors and the bronze bells, wooden objects and embroidery.

Road from the top of the pass in the direction of Bivona is in the works. At the moment a large part is only gravel and difficult with the racing bike. But the route is beautiful and is practically car-free.

Burgio is a small town rich in history and traditions. Like much of the island, this town has been ruled over the centuries by different populations. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries Burgio became famous throughout the island for the production of ceramics. The territory rich in raw materials at that time attracted workers from nearby Caltagirone who opened the first shops in the town. In 1990 Burgio was recognized as a "Municipality with an established artistic and traditional ceramic tradition" and is part, together with 32 other Italian municipalities, of the Italian City of Ceramics Association. Another feature of this town is the production of bells that continues thanks to the work of two unique craft shops in Sicily.
