The best road cycling routes around Camporeale

The Piazza XV Gennaio 1968, paved with travertine marble, is located in the central area of the city. It owes its name to the memory of the day a violent earthquake destroyed a large part of the Municipalities of the Belìce Valley. On it stands the Town Hall, an imposing frontal structure with geometric shapes, interspersed with glass openings, designed by Vittorio Gregotti and Giuseppe Samonà, supported by a portico decorated with ceramics created by Carla Accardi.

What remains of what must have been a village created specifically during the twenty years of Fascism for the workers building the SP2, the road connecting Partinico to the small towns of San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Jato. Four buildings in a row. You walk along the road and suddenly you see them side by side: first a two-story farmhouse, with its classic reddish color, of which almost all that remains are a memory; then another, just like it, about twenty meters away, another at the same distance, and then yet another, but this one is different, larger, more elaborate, with porticos, balconies, and exposed stone ornaments.

Starting just outside the town of San Giuseppe Jato, this stretch of provincial road 20 climbs up to the picturesque Portella della Paglia pass, in a succession of hairpin bends and breathtaking views. The surface isn't perfect, but you can pedal safely even on a small section of landslide, which is well-marked. Tackled in autumn/winter, it almost feels like you're not in Sicily.

A mountain pass about 800 meters above sea level, where for a moment you can almost forget you're in Sicily. Surrounded by woods and deep gorges, it is sadly famous for the massacre that took place there after World War II. Nearby, during the Fascist era, a small village of roadmen's houses was built, whose structures still adorn the sides of the road today.

Located at the end of Corso Calatafimi and the road to Monreale, it is one of the four historic entrance gates to the city of Palermo, perhaps the most important.

Built in the 14th century by order of Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte due to its privileged location overlooking the sea, Alcamo Castle has an impregnable exterior, while its interior is elegant. It has a rhomboid layout with four towers—two square and two round—and a large internal courtyard. The castle's openings are Gothic-style mullioned windows with two and three lights. An impregnable fortress and prestigious residence of Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte, who likely built it between 1340 and 1350, the castle takes its name from the Counts who owned it from 1410 to 1812. With its sturdy structure, built on a rhomboidal plan, and four alternating towers—two cylindrical and two square—it protected the city and withstood violent attacks for centuries, including the infamous one by the Islamic pirate, Barbarossa. On the north facade, two original single-lancet windows remain, while in the internal courtyard, two double-lancet and three-lancet windows remain. The castle's grand staircase is made of red marble from the quarries of Mount Bonifato. Opposite the theater dedicated to the poet Cielo d'Alcamo, in the same square, the symbolic monument of the city of Alcamo, the Castle of the Counts of Modica, stands before the visitor.
