The ascent is beautiful and lonely. More than 8 percent average gradient. The last kilometers through San Pellegrino di Alpe are a real juice extractor though!

I climbed this beautiful stretch my first time on Sunday 1 June '25 with confidence and in the end with a lot of satisfaction! At first sight coming from the path that comes from Mount Rondinaio it aroused a bit of moderate fear in me because the slope is very accentuated. Then once I started up the climb the fear immediately vanished! Beautiful view once I reached the stone that describes reaching the summit.

the closing of the ring has a challenging part, with some slightly dangerous parts and others not marked, at least as far as the route that the navigator makes you do is concerned

Monte Giovo rises next to Lago Santo in Modena and offers those who reach the top a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, being second only to Monte Cimone. The spectacle is guaranteed both from the Emilian and Tuscan sides.

Pieve Fosciana offers access to significant peaks in both the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Notable peaks include Monte Prado, the highest peak in Tuscany, and Pania Secca in the Apuan Alps. Other popular summits are Monte Giovo and Mount Rondinaio, both offering extensive panoramic views.
Monte Prado holds the distinction of being the highest peak in Tuscany, reaching 2,054 meters. It is part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and provides sweeping 360-degree views.
From peaks like Monte Prado, you can enjoy 360-degree panoramas encompassing the entire Apuan Alps, the Garfagnana valley, and on clear days, even the Ligurian Sea and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Monte Giovo offers views from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Apuan Alps, and from the Po Valley to the Alps.
Yes, several peaks offer challenging experiences. Pizzo delle Saette in the Apuan Alps provides a more adventurous hike with some routes involving scrambling and exposed sections. The ascent to Mount Altaretto also features exposed sections and a short equipped stretch with a fixed rope, requiring sure-footedness.
The region boasts diverse natural features. Monte Prado's northern face features typical glacial geoforms like cirques and moraine deposits. Pania Secca is known for its karst phenomena, including the famous Grotta del Vento (Cave of the Wind). The area is also characterized by vast beech forests, expansive summit meadows, and dramatic marble peaks.
The best time for hiking is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October) when trails are clear of snow and weather conditions are more stable. Winter hiking is possible on some peaks like Monte Giovo and Mount Rondinaio, but requires adequate preparation, equipment like ice axes and crampons, and checking weather and avalanche bulletins.
While many peaks offer intermediate to challenging routes, there are easier hiking options in the surrounding area. For specific family-friendly trails, you can explore the Hiking around Pieve Fosciana guide, which includes routes like the 'Eremo di Capraia loop from Sillico' with an easy difficulty grade.
Beyond hiking, the region around Pieve Fosciana offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous routes for cycling, including challenging road cycling segments like the 'Descent to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana'. There are also dedicated running trails and more options for cycling in the area.
The trek to Monte Prado can take approximately 6 hours, with an elevation gain of about 900 meters. Routes typically start from points like Casone di Profecchia, leading through beech forests and prairies to the Apennine ridge and the summit.
The Apuan Alps, home to peaks like Pania Secca and Pizzo delle Saette, are renowned for their dramatic marble peaks, geological complexity, and karst phenomena. The Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, where Monte Prado is located, are characterized by a landscape transitioning from vast beech forests to expansive summit meadows and rocky slopes, and are part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for rich biodiversity.
Common starting points include Casone di Profecchia for Monte Prado, and Piglionico or Rifugio Rossi for peaks in the Apuan Alps like Pania Secca and Pizzo delle Saette. Many routes to Monte Giovo start from Lake Santo.
Visitors frequently highlight the breathtaking panoramic views, the sense of accomplishment from reaching the summits, and the diverse natural landscapes. The opportunity to stand on Tuscany's highest point at Monte Prado and witness extensive vistas is particularly rewarding. The unique geological features and the challenging yet rewarding trails also receive high praise from the komoot community.
