The parish church of Santo Stefano stands in the village of Menaggio, where the Strada Regina once passed, a short distance from Lake Como. Construction of the church began in 1618 on the ruins of earlier Romanesque buildings, and its orientation was changed by moving the façade toward the lake. The church was enlarged, with a lengthwise layout featuring three naves and six side chapels. The work was carried out thanks to donations from the wealthy Calvi family of Menaggio. The frescoes inside the church of Santo Stefano are the work of Luigi Tagliaferri (1841-1927), a prolific painter from a family of artists from the Lecco area. The beautiful painting by Bernardino Luini (1481-1532), depicting the Madonna and Child with an Angel, was located in the Rosary Chapel. It was later sold to the Austrian governor Carlo Firmian in exchange for the transfer of the Prefecture from Tremezzo to Menaggio. Today, a copy of the famous painting is displayed in the parish church; the original is in the Louvre Museum in Paris. (c) https://www.comoeilsuolago.it/menaggiochiesa.htm

The church on this site has ancient origins but was remodeled during the 19th century. FEATURES On the church's façade, we see the municipal coat of arms, with the effigy of the castle, and a funerary stone: the latter is of Roman origin and belongs to Lucius Minicius Exoratus, a notable of the Empire, from the 1st century AD. The building has a nave and a small bell tower. Inside, among the paintings, stand out a Nativity and a Flagellation from the 1700s. The Nativity scene, entirely handmade by Susy using the crochet technique, can be visited daily at the Church of Santa Marta, at Via Calvi 15.

After arriving at the chapel, we continued along the path, then we came to the large field with the house, and there, it was impossible to see where the path continued. We had to retrace our steps.

"Lord Jesus, eternal Word of the Father, you became silence for us. And in the silence that leads us to your tomb, there is one more word we want to say to you as we reflect on the Way of the Cross we walked with you: Thank you! Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the gentleness that overthrows arrogance. Thank you for the courage with which you took up the cross. Thank you for the peace that flows from your wounds. Thank you for giving your holy Mother to us as our mother too. Thank you for the love you showed in the face of betrayal. Thank you for turning tears into smiles. Thank you for loving everyone without excluding anyone. Thank you for the hope you pour out in the hour of trial. Thank you for the mercy that heals misery. Thank you for laying aside everything to enrich us." to make. Thank you for transforming the cross into a tree of life. Thank you for the forgiveness you offered your murderers. Thank you for conquering death. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the light you have ignited in our nights, for reconciling every division and thus making us all brothers and sisters, children of the same Father in Heaven." (Prayer for the Stations of the Cross with the Holy Father, Pope Francis, Good Friday 2023)
