Himmelev Skov is a nature area of two halves. The northern part consists of gravel pits and the soil is nutrient poor. This means conifers do well here, which is obvious from the trails that explore the heath like landscape and lakes. The southern part, Kildemosen, is much more lush with alder swamps and reed beds. It makes for a varied place to explore.

The long, thin Fanen Sø dominates the northwestern corner of Himmelev Skov, a state forest that was established in 2004. Together with neighboring Noden, it's nestled in an old gravel pit area. The nutrient poor conditions has given rise to exciting plant species, such as the early marsh orchid.

Noden is a lovely little lake in the northern part of Himmelev Skov. The old gravel pits here are nutrient poor, which gives rise to a heath like landscape where sea buckthorn and conifers thrive. Himmelev Skov was established as a state forest in 2004, when the first trees were planted here.

A beautiful woodland and one that's part of Roskilde’s Green Ring, a project to create landscape continuity across the forests of Central and North Zealand. Hikers can follow the waymarked Hjertestien (Heart Trail), a lovely 2-kilometer (1.2 mi) loop through the forest.
