The Zollern-Alb Observatory is one of the largest public observatories in Germany. Initial plans to build a modern observatory here arose in 1996. Following planning and construction, the observatory was opened on September 29, 2006. A Cassegrain telescope with an 80-centimeter primary mirror forms the centerpiece of the station. A separate domed building with a 20-centimeter Newtonian telescope is used as a youth observatory. The observatory is planned to be expanded in the future to include a solar station, a deep-sky station, and a radio astronomy station.
