Castello Camozzi Vertova

Highlight • Castle

The town of Costa di Mezzate is dominated by the Camozzi Vertova Castle which, although rising halfway up the Colle Alto called Colle San Geminiano, constitutes the most prominent element of the town.

It was erected by Emperor Otto I (962) but after the final defeat of Barbarossa in the battle of Legnano (1176), the properties were assigned by the Municipality of Bergamo, to the most faithful families of the captains, the Albertoni de Vertua (Vertova), the Rogerio de Scalve and the noble Del Zoppo family of Bergamo.

Around 1160 Albertus Albertoni de Vertua defended Bergamo in the war against the Barbarossa (league of Pontida) on the site of the ancient fortress.

Alberto de Vertua, who also participated in the peace of Constance (1183), was awarded, and with him the descendants, the domain of the castle, becoming the progenitor of the Vertova Counts, then Camozzi Vertova, who inherited the property.

In the period of the Lordships, the castle fulfilled its role of defense of the places and the inhabitants and found itself at the center of military events during the wars between Milan and Venice.

After the peace of Lodi (1454), the castle lost its military function and became a Renaissance residence.

Castel Liteggio Fortress

Highlight • Castle

Castel Liteggio was built in the 15th century by the Viscontis of Milan, as a defensive stronghold located in the Liteggio hamlet of the Municipality of Cologno al Serio, corresponding to the border between the Duchy of Milan and the Venetian Republic, traced by the "Fosso Bergamasco".

Later the Castle was transformed into an elegant stately home with a large park.

Castel Liteggio was a truly autonomous village, due to the presence of shops and internal houses, the abundance of water and the facing farmhouses which guaranteed complete autonomy for centuries, at least until the end of the eighteenth century.

Subsequently Giovanni Maironi da Ponte reported Castel Liteggio as a district of the municipality of Cologno al Serio.

It's a steep climb up here, no matter which direction you come from. Unfortunately, the gate is still locked early in the morning, and you can't get in.

It is difficult to call it a castle, it is simply a shaded 360° panoramic terrace. In addition to this, it allows a small tour of the lower part where you can see the gardens, a fountain and the tower. Public toilets are available. A nice stop between the hills and the upper city...

From the San Vigilio funicular exit, continue on the right, in a few minutes you will reach the gate of the castle park. Enter, go up the stairs inside the tower. At the top you can enjoy the 360° view of the whole of Bergamo in the shade of large trees.

Over the decades, in more recent times, the Visconti structure was also used as the site of an elementary school, but towards the end of the last century Castel Liteggio underwent a phenomenon of abandonment and degradation which continues to this day. In recent years, various proposals have been presented, by public and private bodies, for the recovery of the structure, however the lack of agreement between the interested parties has not allowed any restoration work to be started. The Castle, once considered an impregnable fortress, therefore seems definitively destined for ruin. Private property, after having repeatedly and in vain attempted an auction aimed at using the property as an accommodation facility / mini-apartment, has not demonstrated any intention to stop the increasingly rapid progress of structural degradation. Little or nothing remains of the village of Castel Liteggio and its inhabitants, who were its historical and cultural memory. The three farmhouses, which formed the backbone of the village, have completely changed their identity: Borghetto, after the restoration, became a B&B, Liteggio was rebuilt to house mini-apartments and a Relais, while little remains of the farmhouse in Via Fattoria, which collapsed in on itself in 2011. The remains of the latter and the small private church with tower and house, which stands in front of the Castle, have been put up for sale at auction.
