Nestled in the hills of Val d’Arda, which in prehistoric times were covered by the sea and of which traces remain in numerous fossils, Castell’Arquato stands within the Parco Regionale del Piacenziano, which takes its name from this historical period. An Orange Flag of the Touring Club Italiano, the medieval village, of rare beauty and great scenic impact, is capable of fascinating from afar, with its profile dominating the entire valley, as well as up close, with its narrow streets and its medieval stone houses, perfectly preserved and subject to constant restoration.

A wonderful stop. Both the church and the baptistery were open, and we were able to enter for a visit. It's worth a detour if you're in the area.

First mentioned in 981, the ancient church was completely rebuilt in Baroque style in the early 17th century at the behest of the Pallavicino marquises and subsequently modified in the apse area; heavily damaged by Allied bombing during the Second World War, it was restored in 1951 with the reconstruction of the bell tower and the façade in a revised neoclassical style, designed by engineer Carlo Corradi; assigned in 2003 to the diocese of Parma, it was restored between 2013 and 2014. The place of worship, flanked by two chapels on each side, is internally decorated with Doric pilasters and frescoes on the lunetted barrel vaults.

Very pretty little bar with a lovely outdoor pergola, ideal for a "sandwich stop". The Malvasia is not bad either.
