Viano Castle

Highlight • Castle

What remains of the castle is the result of the restoration carried out in 1970 by the owner.
Some ruins remain of the ancient walls that were demolished in 1793.
In 1335 the Fogliani were the first owners of the manor, a strategic point of their area domains.
In 1370 the construction of a new castle is attributed, perhaps following the destruction of the previous fortification, as evidenced by a plaque.
The castle, except for a brief submission to the Este family, remained under the Fogliani family until 1589.
In 1596 the castle passed to Count Pompeo Aldrovandi of Bologna and remained with the descendants until the abolition of the fiefdoms

Palazzo Ducale di Sassuolo

Highlight • Historical Site

The Ducal Palace of Sassuolo is one of the most important baroque residences in northern Italy. Its current appearance took shape at the behest of Duke Francesco I d'Este, who in 1634 commissioned the architect Bartolomeo Avanzini to transform the ancient family castle into a modern suburban residence for the court. Wall paintings, stucco decorations, sculptures and fountains still today convey the sense of this "delight" which remained on the margins of public knowledge and attendance for a long time. After many years of military administration and complex restoration work, in 2004 the Palace was finally handed over to the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.

From 8 February to 29 March 2021:

opening by reservation exclusively for groups of 5 to 10 people.

On Saturdays and Sundays the Palace remains closed to the public.
For the visit to the Doge's Palace, until March 29th. only allowed for groups, reservation is required.

Anyone who still wishes to make a reservation can do so by telephone via the Urp of the Municipality of Sassuolo (0536 880801) or the Palazzo Ducale ticket office (389 2673365).
