At the lower end of the street, the Powder Tower rises, which once fortified the southwestern corner of the city wall and housed the city's powder magazine. The tower probably dates from the mid-15th century and also served as a prison at times. According to legend, Black Peter from Schinderhannes' robber gang was allegedly held here. The former customs and fortified castle Linz, built in 1365 by Archbishop Engelbert III, was originally integrated into the city wall, thus serving as the northwestern corner tower of the city fortifications. From the castle, a passage on the city wall led to the Rhine Gate and the adjacent customs house. Some parts of the building, including the tower and the main entrance in the south, still belong to the medieval structure. After 1707, the complex, once surrounded by a pond and castle garden, was remodeled and expanded several times. In 1821, the castle came into the possession of the Rhine customs inspector Anton Feith. Iron anchors on the northern outer wall still bear his name. Structural changes such as the demolition of the wooden bridge over the now-covered pond and the construction of the wide stone staircase fall into this period. From 1950, it was temporarily owned by the city, but the castle has been in private ownership again since 1984.
