Hohenwestedt is located on the western edge of the Aukrug Nature Park in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein and, with almost 5,000 inhabitants, is the largest municipality in the Mittelholstein district. Historically, Hohenwestedt was first mentioned in 1217 under the name Westede, which means something like "settlement in the forest", in a school document by Archbishop Gerhard of Bremen. The actual founding of the town is not exactly dated, but it is likely to have been much earlier, as research has shown that Hohenwestedt is one of the oldest settlement areas in the country, dating back to the 5th - 9th centuries. Due to its favorable location and intact economy, Hohenwestedt has always been well populated. Numerous companies, restaurants and accommodation options, social facilities, leisure opportunities and a wide range of associations and clubs are reasons why many people from Hohenwestedt and the surrounding area call the municipality the center of their lives.
