Vihren Peak

Highlight • Summit

There are different options to climb this peak.
I suggest to climb it from Kazanite and the return back to Vihren hut throught Kabata

There are number of reasons for that:
1) If you climb in reverse order than you can skip Koncheto because of exhaustion and I think that Koncheto is a place that you should visit!
2) The way through Kazanite is steeper and is more inconvenient for descent (the knees!)
3) I'm sure I'm missing some reasons

Be sure that in the summer you have at least 2 liters of water because there is no water on the road and the sun shines.

Warning: Be aware that the weather can change dramatically in seconds!

You can find Edelweiss in Kazanite.

You should park you car next to Vihren hut early in the morning (7a.m.). Later in the day the parking is full and the police will close the road (next to Baikusheva mura).

Hut Begovitsa (Formerly Kamenitsa)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The mountain hut of BTC Begovitsa (formerly Kamenitza) is located in the northern part of the Pirin Mountains. It is located on the left bank of the Begovishka / Begovitsa River. It is a massive three-storey building with a capacity of 90 beds with shared bathrooms. There is a parking lot and three bungalows. The hut is electrified, supplied with water, heating is done with wood-burning stoves. It has a communal kitchen and a dining room.

Neighboring sights:
- Mount Kamenitsa / 2822m / - 4.00h.
- Cottage Pirin - 5.00h.
- Tekovno lake - 3.30h.
- Vihren hut - 7.00h.
- Cottage Demianitsa - 5.30h.
- Hut Sinaanitsa - 6.30h.
- Cottage Yane Sandanski - 1.30h.
- Cabin Bezbog - 7.30h.
- Mountain Kukli / 2686m / - 2.00h.
- Mountain Zuba / 2650m. / - 3.00h.
- Manenko lake - 4.30h.

The home-made fig and blueberry ice cream is praised on the internet. Unfortunately, we had no time and did not know about it, so we are (coming from the hut Pirin) to hut Yane Sandanski.

The way from here to the hut Yane Sandanski is simply breathtaking (!) Along a torrent. One should not miss this way in any case.

In winter, the hut also operates a small ski lift.

You can find more information about this and other huts in the Pirin Mountains on Joe's Cabin List:

Vihren Peak and Glacier Base

Highlight • Summit

We did this hike on a hot September day and the conditions were very dry, in any other conditions I would only recommend expert hikers do it. Also, be warned there is a lot of bouldering at times and the only places to replenish water are at Vihren Hut and Banderitsa Chalet. At this time of year, the gondola only runs once a day - 8am up and 4.30 pm down.

Koncheto Ridge

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

This is one of the most interesting tracks I've hiked! On the one side the steep is almost vertical, on the other - it is deeper and very very steep... There is steel cable mounted in the rocks to protect the visitors, but before it was mounted - the people was passing the ridge seated like on a saddle - "riding" the mountain :-) In fact the name "koncheto" means "The small horse" in Bulgarian.
A lot of adrenaline and beautiful views when there is no fog (in the Autumn maybe). The place is windy so keep in mind that the weather may dramatically change for a minute.
You can find edelvais there but don't break it - keep it so other tourist can see it too (usually people are surrounding with stones to protect them)

Second highest mountain in Bulgaria, so when the weather is good you can enjoy a very far-reaching view. The section of road between the Banderitsa campsite and the Vihren hut is closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (one-way street, controlled by the police), so start as early as possible. It is also worth being at the summit around 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., otherwise, depending on the weather, clouds can cover the summit.

Knife-edge ridge. 1 meter wide in the narrowest part. Very steep slopes. Maximum caution is required!

From the top you have a great view of the rest of the Pirin Mountains. Definitely worth going all the way up. It takes about two and a half to three hours.

It's been ages since we hiked the entire Rila and Pirin Mountains for 2 weeks, but those were unforgettable experiences. Fast-moving mountains, sunburn during the day, scratching your tent early in the morning - everything is possible ... The hospitality of the people and the wonderful landscape remain an unforgettable memory. I have no idea what it looks like there now ... but back then you could hike for hours without meeting a soul. And if someone came, they talked - in Russian, English, or even just with hands and feet. 😁 And then hitchhiking alone to the Black Sea, because the friends had a longer vacation, and I had to return by flight from Burgas ... There were consistently only positive experiences and only helpful and hospitable people. Is that still the case today ???
