August 5, 2026, View of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal and Lock Keeper's House

The Ludwig Canal (Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal, also called Ludwigskanal or regionally "Alter Kanal") was a 172.4 km long waterway in the 19th and 20th centuries between the Danube near Kelheim and the Main near Bamberg. In a broader sense, the canal, built between 1836 and 1846, was part of a navigable connection between the North Sea near Rotterdam and the Black Sea near Constanța. By crossing the European main watershed, the ambitious construction project held a special position. 100 locks, partly in the rivers Altmühl and Regnitz, overcame a total difference in altitude of 264 meters (80 m ascent from the Danube and 184 m descent to the Main). The successor to the canal, which was abandoned in 1950, is the Main-Danube Canal, built from 1960 to 1992.

There Ludwig always goes. Recommendation to stop at the Biergarten Schleuse 35. Small cozy Biergarten.

The building you see today was built immediately after its destruction in the 2nd Margraves' War. The citizens rebuilt it in record time: Material. Massive sandstone was used, giving the building its characteristic, sturdy appearance to this day. A late Gothic structure with Renaissance influences was created. Particularly striking is the steep timber-framed gable, which was later plastered over. The town hall was much more than just an office for the mayor back then. The open ground floor (the so-called arcades) used to house the bread and meat benches. Bakers and butchers sold their goods here under the protection of the city council. The city council met on the first floor, and justice was administered. The council bell in the turret announced important verdicts or warned of fire. From early on, there was a "council room" in the town hall where the council members were entertained.

Beautiful Kneipp facility with a large playground. Also ideal for children and four-legged friends. A very small stream runs directly adjacent. There is also a restroom, shelter, seating, and a footpath with water (various surfaces).

A beautifully restored medieval building in the center of the market square. Today it serves as a restaurant, where you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the old town.

A short walk from Nuremberg train station takes you into the countryside, along the beautiful Pegnitz river (watch out for ducks and bathers 😁).
