Tannenwald Forest

Highlight • Forest

There aren't actually any fir trees here; it's now a truly beautiful mixed deciduous forest that was formerly used for military purposes. Today it's a natural paradise, covering over 250 hectares. Simply stunning.

The pine forest is a peaceful place. Especially on the western edge, it's still clearly visible that it was also used for army training.

Because of the angry storms in the past, trees have fallen over and over again. Do you have to climb over branches and trunks? Oskar is having fun. 👌🏻😊

Grüne Fraktion Leipzig
August 6, 2025, Memorial to the 53 Antifascists

The "Memorial of the 53" in Leipzig-Lindenthal commemorates a Nazi crime committed on April 12, 1945: At that time, 52 prisoners from Leipzig prisons were shot and buried by the Gestapo on the parade ground in the Tannenwald forest. After the war, the victims were exhumed and buried in a communal grave with 53 coffins on May 5, 1945. In 1954, a memorial with a grove of honor and steles commemorating the murdered victims was created at the authentic site. The complex has been a listed monument since 2005 and was most recently restored in 2020. The Alliance Greens parliamentary group in Leipzig is committed to preserving the memorials to Nazi crimes. A special tour of "Discovering Green Corners" can be found here. This stop was created as part of the "Discovering Green Corners" tour "Leipzig's Northwest" by the Alliance 90/The Greens parliamentary group https://www.gruene-ecken-entdecken.de/leipzig/leipzigs-nordwesten.html

Attention, this is a shared cycle/footpath and not a cycle racing track! Please also watch out for pedestrians and dogs and make yourself known from a distance. There are about 4 paths leading out of the woods on the route.

Even if we go hiking more for relaxation, I think it's important to pause here for a moment at a memorial to one of the crimes of the Nazi era.
