The sandstone obelisk can be seen from afar. It offers a narrow view of Heiligenstadt.

Well, the view is rather modest but it's great that it's still open.

The Elector's Stone, which is located south of Heilbad Heiligenstadt on the Iberg, is a popular tourist destination and offers a wonderful view of the city. On the edge of the Iberg, near the meridian and the old highway that leads from Heiligenstadt via the forester's house to Kalteneber, there is a small sandstone obelisk. This monument commemorates the first visit of the Elector Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal and was erected so that the citizens would have an "eternal monument" before their eyes. On September 2nd, 1777, the pyramid was ceremoniously unveiled in the presence of the citizens, the council and the students. Amid cannon fire and cheers, it was erected on the spot where the Elector had "inspected" the area on July 3rd of the same year. Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal (January 3rd, 1719 to July 25th, 1802) was the last great Elector. His reign was from 1774 to 1802. Source: https://www.thueringer-wald.com/w/kurfuerstenstein

The Maienwand primeval forest adventure and educational trail runs parallel to the steep slope for about 500 meters. The terrain here drops steeply, in parts even vertically over 150 meters. Thanks to the steepness, a primeval forest has been preserved here, completely untouched by people and axes, consisting mainly of beech trees and yew trees in the undergrowth. The oldest beech trees date from the 18th century, as do individual specimens of yew trees. A real rarity: the European yew, which is protected in Germany, is hardly found as a forest tree here anymore. Source: https://thueringer-urwaldpfade.de/artikel/urwaldperle-maienwand-heiligenstadt/
