Peace and quiet on the lovely little lake. With its high phosphor level it's not made for swimming (forbidden anyway as it's a nature reserve) and I wouldn't let the dog in either. The name "Maar" (volcanic lake) is misleading as it's been filled in in the course of renaturation of the open-cast lignite mine "Futura". The track around the lake is not made for the casual biker, for me it's more mountain bike single trails. But the cosy sandy beaches are ideal for picnics and accessible by bike. Enjoy.

After the coaling was completed in 1993, the opencast mine was filled with overburden from other opencast mines in the region, in particular the Hambach opencast mine. The recultivation has been largely completed since 2004. The areas in the south with the Wiedenfelder Höhe dump were restored for agricultural use. In the northwest, an extensive 120 hectare recreational area with the Peringssee was created near Bedburg.

After coal mining ceased in 1993, the open-cast mine was backfilled with overburden from other open-cast mines in the region, particularly the Hambach mine. Recultivation has been largely completed since 2004. The areas to the south, including the Wiedenfelder Höhe spoil heap, have been restored for agricultural use. To the northwest, near Bedburg, a large recreational area of approximately 120 hectares, including the Peringssee lake, has been created.

The local recreation area “Peringsmaar” lies between Bedburg and Glesch. The artificially created landscape lake with bioponds in front of it in the former opencast mining area has a diameter of approx. 500 m and a depth of approx. 25 m. The lake is currently fed from swamp water, but will soon be fed from the Erft, which has more water again. The lake is a eutrophic body of water with a phosphorus content of 100 to 320 milligrams per liter of water. Therefore it is not suitable as bathing water. Unlike agricultural recultivation areas, the area is left to its own devices. The circular hiking trails are designed in such a way that the visitor is guided to characteristic biotope types, such as still waters, reedbeds, forests, forest edges and grassland. There are numerous hiking parking spaces available near Bedburg and Glesch.
