Scheibe Village Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The Scheibe open-cast mine, or Šibojska jama in Upper Sorbian, was a lignite open-cast mine that operated from 1985 to 1996 east of Hoyerswerda in the Lusatian lignite mining area. In 1986/1987, the town of Scheibe, which gave it its name, and the developments of the town of Burg, located to the north, had to make way for it. After mining operations ceased, Lake Scheibe emerged as a post-mining landscape.

Lake Scheibe

Highlight • Lake

Beautifully constructed circular cycle path around the lake, with connections to the Lusatian cycle path network. Partly very idyllic picnic areas with benches and tables in the bank thicket or obviously. It's worth pedaling here, whether for training or relaxation.

Lakeside Hammock Spot

Highlight • Lake

From the bike path, it goes over sandy paths to a small slope. A couple of beaten paths lead down the slope (caution: steep), see photos. At the bottom you will find a flat area with some trees, which offer a perfect opportunity for hammocks. There is also enough space for tents. Here you can get into the water perfectly and you have about 20m into the lake, wonderful soft sand with a water depth of about 50cm.

We spent a lovely night here on our tour.

Unfortunately, as always, some people leave their rubbish here. We were able to collect some things and put the garbage bags up on the bike path. These have to be collected by the road service as we could not transport so much rubbish on the bike.
Everyone help to preserve such beautiful places and don't leave your rubbish behind.

Scheibe-See viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

South of Burg there is this multifunctional place. There are several parking spaces here, there are information boards, a rest area and one of the best viewpoints on Lake Scheibesee on the north shore. Further east, access to the steep bank is increasingly difficult due to the sometimes prickly bushes.

Such memories are incredibly important for future generations. Memories of villages that fell victim to coal excavators.
