Originally it was called Fontanares due to the abundance of water in its surroundings, probably related to its proximity to the river Eresma from which it receives its surname. Today it is a mostly residential municipality but it retains a peasant spirit due to its location in the Segovian countryside region and its still active agricultural activity.

Hontanares de Eresma owes its current name to the fact that fountains and springs (fontanares and hontanares) abounded in its municipal term, hence its medieval name Fontanares. Most of these are currently forgotten and flooded, but in other times they were very well cared for by shepherds and farmers who spent hours in the fields from sunrise to sunset, so they needed water. Today it is a bit of a "bedroom" in the neighboring capital of Segovia
