Les Guilvinistes
October 14, 2026, Bad Ems Spa Town (Great Spa Towns of Europe, UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Bad Ems experienced a heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the small town was considered one of the most famous spa towns in Europe. During this time, important buildings were constructed, such as the Princely Orange-Nassau Bathhouse, built between 1709 and around 1725, which houses what is probably the oldest pump room in Germany; in 1786, the Ems Congress of the envoys of the Archbishops of Mainz, Trier, Cologne, and Salzburg, as well as the Bishop of Freising, met in the Mainzer Haus on the left bank of the Lahn. Johann Wolfgang Goethe was a spa guest in 1774, and in the 19th century, Ems succeeded as a spa town and summer residence for numerous European monarchs and artists, including Emperor Wilhelm I, Tsars Nicholas I and Alexander II of Russia, Richard Wagner, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Finally, the events of July 13, 1870, led to the momentous Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. On that day, Heinrich Abeken reported in a telegram to his superior, Otto von Bismarck, about a meeting between the French ambassador de Benedetti and the Prussian King Wilhelm in the spa town of Ems. Bismarck heavily edited this so-called Ems Dispatch and published a shortened version, which is now considered one of the provocations that led to the war.

The Ruppertsklamm is recommended to all nature enthusiasts. Sturdy, waterproof shoes are advantageous, as you sometimes have to step into the stream. Depending on the weather, it can carry quite a bit of water.

The spa town of Bad Ems lies on the Lahn River. This river forms the border between the northern Westerwald and the southern Taunus mountains. The modern spa industry of the third millennium is still a defining factor in the town, but much more striking in the townscape are the reminiscences of bygone times, when crowned heads from Europe and even Russia were guests here. Bad Ems is also intertwined with Germany's political history, as the famous "Ems Dispatch" originated here.
