October 22, 2026, Path Along the Railway in the Giant Mountains

This path is a former 17th-century trade route. Before the modern asphalt road was built, horse-drawn carts rolled through here, and at night, smugglers moved goods between Silesia and the Czech Republic. The road also connected the surrounding forest glassworks. The route's biggest secret is Jelenia Łąka – if you look closely, you will find a memorial stone and the foundations of the Michelsbaude inn in the thicket of bushes. Before the war, life was bustling here, and weary travelers drank beer. Today, there is no trace of the building, only the forest wilderness and a wooden bench standing off to the side.

October 21, 2026, Hala Izerska

Today it is an empty, vast mountain meadow, but as recently as the first half of the 20th century, rural life thrived here. The village of Gross-Iser (Wielka Izera) was founded in the 17th century by an Evangelical refugee from the Czech Republic. Before World War II, there were over 40 houses, two schools, three mountain huts, and a hunting lodge here. In May 1945, the village was occupied by Soviet soldiers, and the inhabitants were displaced. By the 1960s, all the buildings had been razed to the ground by the military. Riding along the bike path through the middle of the Hala, you are moving along the former main street of this non-existent Iser settlement.

Along the Izera riverbed and its tributaries (especially on the Czech side in Safirovy potok), life was already bustling with treasure hunters in the Middle Ages. The Walloons, who were ancient forest experts and mineralogists, panned for gold and rare gemstones in the local river sands: sapphires, rubies, topazes, and zircons. The greatest wealth was hidden in the deposits at the foot of the basalt mountain Bukovec. While pedaling along the banks, you are riding through the historical "El Dorado" of the Sudetes.

The highest open-pit mine in Central Europe, located at the top of the Izerski Garb ridge. Quartz has been mined here since the 13th century for the needs of local glassworks and alchemical laboratories. Today, the mine is inactive, and its excavation creates an amazing, raw, almost lunar landscape. The entire area and the gravel roads crossing it are dotted with fragments of milky quartz shimmering in the sun. For gravel and MTB cyclists, it is a cult destination – the climb to the mine is demanding and steep, but the views of the entire Karkonosze and Izera Mountains fully compensate for it.

Since my childhood, I have considered Špindlerův Mlýn a beautiful mountain village. But nowadays it is too expensive and full of tourists.
