In the Middle Ages, intensive mining activity in Kutná Hora disrupted the lower springs and the town had problems ensuring a sufficient amount of drinking water for its residents. This problem was solved in 1495 by building a dodecagonal stone fountain on what is now Reysk Square. The covered well originally served as a water reservoir, into which drinking water from the St. Vojtěch spring near Bylan, 2.5 km away, was supplied through a wooden pipe. In this way, the city was supplied with drinking water until 1890. The late Gothic fountain in the form of a twelve-sided prism was probably the work of the Wroclaw master builder Brikcí.
