The Pa'rus Trail offers a wonderfully accessible and scenic stroll through Zion National Park, following the Virgin River. This easy 3.4-mile (5.4 km) route, with only 150 feet (46 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 1 hour and 42 minutes to complete. You'll enjoy continuous views of towering sandstone cliffs like The Watchman, lush cottonwood trees, and picturesque footbridges crossing the bubbling water, making it a perfect beginner hike.

Accessing the trail is straightforward, with connections from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, Canyon Junction, and near the Zion Human History Museum, where parking is available. Since it's one of the few trails open to bicycles and leashed pets, it's a versatile option for various visitors. Consider an early morning or late afternoon start for cooler temperatures and stunning light for photography.

What truly sets the Pa'rus Trail apart in Zion is its exceptional accessibility; it's the only trail in the park that is wheelchair-friendly and allows both bicycles and leashed dogs. Interpretive exhibits along the way provide insights into the local geology and wildlife, enriching your experience beyond just the beautiful scenery. It's an ideal choice for families or anyone seeking a peaceful, less strenuous way to immerse themselves in Zion's grandeur.

The Nung'wu Poa (Paiute) Trail Loop offers a refreshing perspective of the Springdale area, winding along the edge of a mesa. You'll encounter a variety of natural surfaces, from wider doubletrack to narrower singletrack, with some sections presenting surprisingly steep and loose climbs. The real payoff comes with the expansive views of Zion Canyon and the dramatic cliffs surrounding Springdale, making it a rewarding experience for a relatively short effort.

This easy 1.8-mile (2.9 km) hiking route involves a modest 260 feet (79 metres) of elevation gain and can be completed in about 50 minutes. The George A. Barker River Park in Springdale provides convenient trailhead access and restrooms, and there are no permits or fees required. The trail is generally accessible from March through December, but be prepared for potential limited signage as it's a newer development.

Named for the Paiute Tribe on whose land it resides, this trail system is a recent addition to the area, with sections opening in 2021 and 2023. It offers a distinct experience from the larger Paiute ATV Trail system, focusing on hiking and mountain biking. The Nung'wu Poa Trail also connects with the Springdale River Trail, allowing for extended loop possibilities back to the park.

There's little shade. Bring sunscreen. If you prefer a quieter setting, this trail isn't really for you. Many tourists visit the trail, and increasingly, many of them are riding fast e-bikes.

It's best to park here or at the museum, as only park buses are allowed into the larger part where most hikes start. I would also recommend getting there as early as possible, as it fills up quickly, parking is difficult, and the paths are also crowded.

This park is a great spot to start and end your ride while you explore the Zion area. There's water, toilets, shady areas, and the river to cool down in.

Nice place to start a trip around Zion National Park.

This is a level trail along the Virgin River that connects the Visitor Center with the South Campground and Zion Canyon. It largely follows the stream, crossing it three times and two tributaries. The name "Pa'rus" comes from a Paiute word meaning "bubbling and falling water." In fact, you can often hear the river while hiking in this pristine and peaceful setting. A few small water cascades, among other things, provide the background noise. The dense riverbank vegetation offers good bird watching opportunities. All visitors should be aware that the stream contains toxic algae that is fatal to dogs! Please do not bring your dog with you.

The iconic Zion National Park lies at the intersection of three major ecosystems - the Mojave Desert, the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin. From the top of Angels Landing to the bottom of The Narrows, this desert oasis is full of possibilities. The peace and tranquility of this region inspired early pioneers to give it the name it bears today, which means something like a place of refuge or sanctuary.

September 23, 2024, View of the Watchman

The Watchman Trail, starting at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, climbs 368 feet (112 meters) to the stunning Watchman Overlook. Here hikers can overlook the Watchman, Temples and Towers, lower Zion Canyon, and the town of Springdale. This viewpoint can get busy, so it's nice to get an early start. Restrooms and water filling stations are available at the Visitor Center, and bikes are not allowed on the trail.
