May 12, 2025, Mt. Hebo Road Climb

The Mt. Hebo Road climb to the summit area in the Oregon Coast Range, heading towards the former transmitter site, is a steep but rewarding road bike challenge. Starting from the town of Hebo, you'll ascend aggressively over approximately 7.8 miles, gaining around 3,000 feet with a consistently steep average gradient of 7.0-7.4%, hitting pitches over 10% along the way through dense evergreen forests. As you near the top, the trees open up to provide impressive panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and coastal valleys, a dramatic contrast to the shaded climb.

January 30, 2024, Grateful Bread Bakery

The bakery's name is a tribute to the owner's late parents, who instilled in her a love for food, family, and community. The Grateful Dead's music also played a role, adding a touch of whimsy and soul to the atmosphere.

Pacific City is a charming coastal town beneath the majestic Cape Kiwanda. Mesmerizing landmarks, sandy beaches, awe-inspiring views, and excellent surfing opportunities surround this picturesque location. Here, you will see the massive “sea stack” rock formation and the towering sand dune leading to Cape Kiwanda's top, offering breathtaking vistas. The town is also an exceptional spot for fishing, surfing, and watching dorymen launch their boats directly from the beach.

Devil's Lake is a recreation paradise just inland enough to provide a little shelter from the coastal winds. While cycling around its perimeter you'll have half a dozen chances to get down to the water due to all the parks that dot its shores. If you're doing a long ride down Hwy 101 the State Park is a great overnight stop.

A beautiful beach in Nehalem Bay State Park where you can run alongside the water and around to the bay. There isn't an official trail, but you can run for a 5km stretch along the beach before looping back around to the trail on the eastern side.

Dark, narrow, and winding this stretch of the 1930s run of Highway 101 is a cyclists dream. Far less busy than the new stretch of highway you'll have a much more peaceful ride here. However, due to the narrowness of the road you'll need to be aware of when you due encounter car traffic.

October 4, 2023, D River

The D River is one of claimants to the title of "World's Shortest River". While this claim is disputed there's no denying that it's run from Devil's Lake to the Pacific is incredibly brief (either 440 feet or 120 feet, depending on how/when it's measured). Aside from that you'll find easy access to the beach from the nearby recreation site that is also home to 2 of the largest kite festivals in the world during summer and autumn.
