The Nicolaaskerk: large, robust, neo-Gothic. As if someone secretly plucked a cathedral out of the city and placed it in the middle of the Dorpsstraat. When Zoetermeer was still mostly meadow and water, the Catholics here also wanted a place that could be seen. Not a small chapel, no. A church with presence. With towers that rose above the cows and windows that tell stories in stained glass. If you look closely, you can still see that audacity. This building says: "we are here too." Inside, you step into another world. High, colorful, full of symbols. Candles burned here for hope, love, and sorrow long before Zoetermeer became a Randstad city. The scent of incense sometimes still hangs in the air, between the sermons and the silence. And yet, it doesn't feel stiff or distant. This is a village church in cathedral clothes. A place where generations of Zoetermeer residents have celebrated their lives. Baptism, marriage, farewell. All under the same vault. Walk around it. Look up at those towers and spires. Consider that this was built with horse and cart, without a crane.

It's currently in scaffolding, covered in yellow/blue netting. This obscures the view.

The water tower is currently being converted into a bed and breakfast with a breakfast room. Meeting rooms are also being added. The In de buurt website shows impressions of the final result: https://indebuurt.nl/zoetermeer/nieuws/zo-komt-de-watertoren-er-straks-als-bed-and-breakfast-uit-te-zien~196303/

Until 1932, free travel between Pijnacker and Berkel wasn't possible. Cyclists and pedestrians paid a cent to pass the 't Meerhek gate. This was the so-called "toll gate" on the Klapwijkseweg between the two villages. In earlier centuries, the Klapwijkseweg was the only passable connection between Pijnacker and Berkel. The narrow road ran between two lakes: the Oostmeer and the Bergboezem. These two lakes were connected by several bridges on the Klapwijkseweg. It was the main way to travel from Berkel to Delft via Pijnacker. To raise funds for the maintenance of the road and the bridges, the municipality of Berkel was granted the right to charge tolls starting in 1555. This "toll right" was sold on several times but remained in effect until 1932. Then the province bought it off, and the Klapwijkseweg became a provincial road, to which the municipality of Pijnacker also contributed financially from that point on. The wrought-iron fencing between the pillars was removed, allowing traffic to pass freely without having to stop and pay tolls. Now you pass the renovated toll gate on your way to the nature and recreation area "De Groenzoom."
