Instead of descending back down the Chemin des Dames, we recommend the less frequented route over the Col d'Echelle. We had the entire route to ourselves. A difficult climb, it takes about 10 minutes longer. Beautiful views guaranteed in good weather!

Be sure to bring your rain gear! There's a small shelter, but it's usually full.

It's worth setting off early, not after 7:00 a.m.! Some areas are only accessible with a guide.

The dry season, generally from December to May, is often considered the best time for hiking in Guadeloupe. During this period, you'll experience less rainfall and more stable weather conditions, which are ideal for tackling the often-slippery and challenging volcanic trails. However, be prepared for sudden weather changes at higher altitudes regardless of the season.
For hiking La Soufrière, wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, as trails can be muddy and rocky. Layered clothing is recommended due to changing temperatures and conditions at different altitudes. Bring rain gear, plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a first-aid kit. A headlamp is also useful if you start early or finish late.
Yes, the volcanic region of Basse-Terre is rich in waterfalls. While not directly on the volcano summit trails, the spectacular Carbet Falls (Second Fall) are located within Guadeloupe National Park, relatively close to the La Soufrière area. Another beautiful option is Cascade des Écrevisses, also easily accessible within the park.
The komoot community rates the hiking experience in Guadeloupe highly, with an average score of 4.3 stars from over 900 reviews. Public transportation options directly to the La Soufrière trailhead are limited. It is generally recommended to reach the starting points, such as Les Bains Jaunes, by car. Taxis or organized tours might be an alternative if you prefer not to drive. Always check local transport schedules and availability in advance.
