This is the historic gatehouse to Mereworth Castle, a Grade I listed moated country house built in the 18th century, replacing an earlier house from the 14th century. Reputed to be the site of the manor of one of the Earls of Gloucester, the wood gets its name from the remains of the moat, which is still visible. The Greensand Way is a long distance walking path that cuts through the wood. The full trail starts in Haslemere, Surrey and walks 103 miles (166 km) to Hamstreet in Kent.
