Look out for an entrance onto a footpath on your right, which follows beside the railway tracks on your left, and the exe estuary on your right. The path is too narrow for cycling but great for walking and running.

Exeter Quay, also known as Exeter Quayside, is a district of Exeter on the River Exe and the Exeter Ship Canal. It was used as a port since prehistoric times, when a sandstone outcrop was used to unload the ships of overseas traders.[1] However, in 1381, the Countess Weir closed the river to shipping. In 1566, a canal was completed to allow ships access. Over time, the number of ships using the quay increased, and so the quay was extended in the late 17th century. Further extension took place in 1830 when a new canal basin was dug. However, in 1840, the railway reached Exeter, and shipping began to decline. The quay is no longer used for shipping, but mainly for recreational purposes.

Nice flat cycle path. But gets VERY busy with 2 wheeled, 2 legged and 4 legged visitors in the summer months. Watch how you go.

A bit rocky in places, as areas have been washed out in recent rains. Picked up a rear puncture and had to walk the bike on to East Budleigh to find a dry, flat spot to do the repair.

Komoot lists over 30 dedicated gravel bike routes in Teignbridge that focus on minimizing traffic, offering a diverse range of experiences from moderate to difficult. This includes 14 moderate and 14 difficult routes, with a couple of easier options for those just starting out.
Teignbridge offers a highly varied landscape for gravel biking. You'll find routes traversing the rugged moorlands and granite tors that border Dartmoor National Park, which can be quite challenging. Other trails follow estuaries, wind through wooded ridges, and trace river valley slopes, providing a mix of surfaces from compacted gravel to more natural, rocky paths. This diversity ensures a 'playground' for all types of gravel riders.
While many routes in Teignbridge lean towards moderate or difficult, there are options suitable for families looking for a traffic-free experience. Look for trails that are specifically designated as 'easy' on komoot, which typically feature gentler gradients and smoother surfaces. Always check the route details for elevation and surface type to ensure it matches your family's ability.
Teignbridge's gravel routes often pass through or near stunning natural features. You might encounter the dramatic granite tors of Dartmoor, such as Haytor Rocks or Hound Tor. The region also boasts beautiful estuaries like the Teign and Exe, and tranquil spots like Coombe Valley Local Nature Reserve. Keep an eye out for highlights like Hunter’s Tor or the serene Haytor Quarry Pond with Water Lilies.
Many of the no-traffic gravel trails in Teignbridge, especially those through public rights of way, forests, or national park areas, are dog-friendly. However, it's crucial to keep dogs under control, especially around livestock or wildlife. Always check specific route details or local signage for any restrictions, and be mindful of other trail users.
The spring and autumn months generally offer the most pleasant conditions for gravel biking in Teignbridge, with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer can be great, but trails might be busier, especially near coastal areas. Winter riding is possible, but be prepared for potentially wet and muddy conditions, particularly on Dartmoor's moorland sections. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
Yes, Teignbridge's unique position between Dartmoor and the English Channel means many routes offer coastal or estuary views. For example, the Haldon, Mamhead and Dawlish route or the Haldon Belvedere and the Estuary route can provide stunning vistas over the Exe Estuary and towards the coast. The Exe Estuary Trail itself, while not exclusively gravel, offers dedicated cycle paths with scenic water views.
Parking availability varies by route. Many trailheads, especially those near popular areas like Haldon Forest Park or access points to Dartmoor, will have designated car parks. For routes starting in or passing through towns, public car parks are usually available. Always check the specific route details on komoot for recommended starting points and parking information.
Many routes in Teignbridge are designed to pass through or near charming villages and towns where you can find cafes, pubs, and other amenities. For instance, routes around the Exe Estuary or those venturing into the Teign Valley often have refreshment stops. It's a good idea to check the komoot map for points of interest along your chosen route to plan your breaks.
Teignbridge's gravel trails often border or extend into Dartmoor, meaning you'll experience similar rugged, challenging terrain with significant climbs and rocky sections, particularly on routes like Castle Drogo and Fingle Bridge. However, Teignbridge also offers a broader mix, including gentler estuary paths and wooded trails not found deep within the moor. This provides a wider variety of 'no traffic' gravel experiences compared to Dartmoor's more consistently wild and exposed character.
The komoot community highly rates gravel biking in Teignbridge, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers frequently praise the region's incredible diversity, from the challenging climbs and wild beauty of the Dartmoor fringes to the serene, traffic-free paths along estuaries and through ancient woodlands. The sense of escape and the stunning natural scenery are often highlighted as key attractions.
