Here we mainly find meadows and grasslands, interspersed with valuable groves. Intensive management through deforestation and mowing has restored the rich flora of yesteryear. Currently, the following plants can be found among others: wood anemone, dandelion, lily of the valley, cranesbill, muskroot, lady's mantle, and Jacob's ladder. Birds are also abundant here: tawny owl, little owl, lapwing, chiffchaff, hoopoe, willow warbler, bluethroat, reed bunting, and many others. The area is freely accessible, but there are no marked hiking trails.

The coal harbour is a side channel of the Albert Canal, built for the transport of coal. This harbour was built at the same time as the Albert Canal, along with three other coal harbours. Before the coal harbours existed, coal was transported by rail to the Walloon steel industry. For this purpose, twelve reserve steam locomotives were stationed in Beringen. The coal harbours became fully operational in 1937. Although there is no longer any mining, these coal harbours are still in use, including for loading imported coal for power plants.

The cycle path through the water leads cyclists over a 212-meter-long and three-meter-wide concrete path, with water at eye level on both sides. Swans and other waterfowl swim along the banks, curiously watching the cyclists. Since its opening, interest in this unique cycle path has been enormous. On average, 800 visitors per day explore this unforgettable part of the Limburg cycle network, with peaks on Saturdays and Sundays, and on some days even up to 5,000 cyclists.

Café Coureur and their Lumberjack rides in both winter and summer are slowly becoming legendary: Lumberjack is one of the first gravel rides ever in Belgium. The rides are great and varied, the staff (Peter, Simon, Virze, and the team) are extremely friendly, and the afterparty with a BBQ and a fire is a must. Not to mention the beautiful café itself with photos and other cycling elements, and the cool Kwaremont beer… Just to be clear, I don't work for Café Coureur, but I am an avid gravel rider and have been riding the Lumberjack for many years.
