The Monument to the Fallen of the Wars of Independence is an obelisk-like sculpture on a raised plinth on the Piazza Martiri D'Italia. Dedicated to the Sardinian fallen in the Wars of Independence, the monument was inaugurated on August 16 1886 and was created by the Piedmontese sculptor Giuseppe Sartorio. Visible on the front are the Italian flag and the portrait of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a united Italy, who ruled from 1861 to 1878. Cagliari's landmark is the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria. It was built in the 13th century but has undergone numerous structural alterations over the years. It incorporates Romantic and Baroque styles, as well as the Pisan style. The current façade recalls the cathedral's original Romantic appearance, but the Baroque style still dominates the interior. A tour of the church reveals magnificent, detailed paintings on the ceiling, imposing sculptures, and a marble pulpit that once stood in Pisa Cathedral. In the crypt, you can marvel at around 300 burial chambers.

The old bastion was a defensive structure that was removed in the 19th century and converted into a neoclassical square. From there, you can enjoy another expansive view of Cagliari, as the viewing platform is located on the aforementioned hill in the old town. You can also easily reach the platform by elevator, avoiding the marble staircase. Also worth seeing on the old bastion is the triumphal arch, damaged in World War II but subsequently rebuilt.
