From the Lüderich hill, which rises to around 260 meters, the view stretches far across the Bergisches Land region. To the west, the landscape opens up towards the Cologne Lowland, where the hills gradually give way to flatter terrain. On clear days, you can even see the Cologne Cathedral. Traces of the mining that once took place around the Lüderich are still visible.

These weren't simply battles, but the first genocide of the 20th century! An estimated 100,000 Herero and Nama people were murdered and imprisoned in concentration camps. May 28th is a national day of remembrance in Namibia to commemorate these events. It is known as Genocide Remembrance Day. Germany only officially acknowledged the genocide in 2021.

A beautiful little stretch of path overgrown with heather and gorse. Here you can see how nature is regenerating after the spruce dieback. In my childhood, this was still a dark spruce plantation.
