Tips from the Community

Rüdiger M
May 30, 2026, Jena City Wall and Pulverturm

Around 1300, the Jena city fortifications had progressed to the point where one could speak of a closed complex. It consisted of moats, walls, intermediate areas, 3 gate towers, 4 corner bastions, and 12 subsequently added shell towers. The Pulverturm on the northwest corner of the city wall is about 20 m high and has 4 floors with a walkway. Together with the reconstructed rampart walk, the house on the wall, and the Johannistor, this is the largest remaining part of the former Jena city fortifications.

The powder tower is part of the old city wall of Jena. It is located at the northwestern corner of the city wall at the current intersection of Leutragraben/Fürstengraben.

During his time, the biologist, physician, and philosopher had a lasting impact on scientific Jena, particularly as a global advocate of Darwin's theory. He gifted the city the world's only Phyletic Museum. Furthermore, his magnificent drawings, such as "Art Forms of Nature," are an integral part of Jena's cultural landscape.

It's nice that such buildings are still well preserved.

🏛️ Historical Overview - Built around 1750 as a classic watermill. - 1886: The mill burned down but was soon rebuilt. - 1905: Mill operations ceased, and the buildings were given new functions. --- 🏭 Industrial Use - Around 1900, Paul Oschatz took over the mill and founded the "Marmor- und Metallwerk Hetschburg," which initially produced artificial marble and later even explosives. - From 1915 onwards, the mill became the metal goods factory "Possin & Döpping GmbH," which produced silver-plated murals and luxury items. - Production continued until 1988, despite environmental concerns—including a 1921 study that investigated a link between the factory and an eye disease in brown trout.

Great wooden bridge 🤩. But be careful, it's still busy in places.
