From 1908 to 1997, the Sophia-Jacoba coal mine brought industrial prosperity to the region. With up to 6,000 employees, it was the largest employer far and wide. After its closure in 1997, prominent individuals in Hückelhoven came together to preserve the "Schacht 3" headframe as a monument. The support association "Schacht 3" Hückelhoven e. V. was founded in 1997. After initial reluctance, not least due to resignation over the closure of their mine, membership growth was moderate. When it became possible to show what some volunteers had achieved to a wider audience, the number of members increased from 197 to 1000 between the end of 2002 and July 2007. While initially older former miners, more and more young people are becoming members. With a contribution of only 10.00 Euros – or voluntarily more – per year, you help to preserve a witness to the past. The association's goal is to be able to show future generations the history of mining and the importance Sophia-Jacoba had in this region. The "Schacht 3" headframe is not only an industrial monument, it is also a landmark of the mining era. Today, "Schacht 3" with its machine house and shaft hall is an attraction for school classes from all over the district. But clubs, hiking, cycling, and senior groups also take advantage of this offer. Since March 2007, the Barbarastollen (70 m tunnel, 23 m shaft) has also been available for guided tours. Tours for 10 or more people can be arranged at any time, in addition to the "Open Days". They usually last 90 minutes. The team from the shaft can also take care of catering.
