This is Zoetermeer at its finest: small, quirky, and full of stories. The Leidsewallen winds its way here between the Old Church and the Dobbeplas. In the past, you looked out over meadows and the large freshwater lake. Now you see ducks, a church tower, and walkers with an ice cream. The street name says it all: 'wallen' and 'wetering'. This was the edge of the village, the border with the water. Barges used to moor here, trade was conducted, and gossip was exchanged. Farmers, fishermen, vicars – everyone passed by the Leidsewallen. And the Dobbeplas? It's only been here since the 70s, when Zoetermeer started dreaming big. But water is in the DNA here. First there was the primeval lake, then the drainage canal, now the Dobbe. Always that lapping against the shore. Always that scent of reeds and space. Stand on the little bridge at the Leidsewallen. Look one way: the centuries-old church tower. Look the other way: the Dobbe with its fountain and city centre. In 10 seconds, you travel from 985 to the present day. Take your camera with you. Especially in the evening light, this is pure Holland: water, air, church silhouette. And if you're lucky, you'll still hear the bells. They've been ringing here since your great-great-grandparents.

In 1574, the Netherlands, including the city of Leiden, was occupied by the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War. William of Orange breached the dikes, flooding the land. This allowed the Sea Beggars to sail from Rotterdam to Leiden. On September 21, 8,000 Beggars with 400 ships ran aground near 't Geertje farm on Geerweg. They had to wait for high tide. During a heavy storm and rain, the Beggars managed to sail on again on October 2. On October 3, 1574, they liberated Leiden from the Spanish. Since then, the people of Leiden have celebrated the Relief of Leiden on October 3. Source: Zoetermeermijnstad.nl

At this point the 8000 Geuzen with 400 ships are stranded and wait for high tide. Heavy storm and rainfall ensure that the Watergeuzen can continue their mission on October 2: on to Leiden! On October 3, 1574 Leiden is liberated from the Spanish by the Geuzen
