A short, steep trail uphill, but then suddenly this breathtaking view over two small lochs and, above all, the impressive Cairngorms. Some views are worth the effort.

I happily braked at this bridge during my bike ride. Deep below, the water lapped against the rocks. I was amazed to see the local kids swimming down it in inflatables. How cool!

This area is beautiful and diverse: mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, heaths, moors... - "My heart, what more could you want?" The river offers several spots where you can cool off (it's really cold! And only choose spots where you can easily exit the water!)

The sculpture park is located right along the path, so you can "just take it with you" without much detour. We didn't notice any signage for this open-air exhibition, but the area, which is surrounded by a wall, is easy to spot.

The terrain around Loch Einich is quite varied, offering a mix of maintained tracks, rocky paths, and open moorland. Some routes, especially closer to starting points like Rothiemurchus, traverse ancient Caledonian pine forests. Be prepared for potential river crossings, which might require waterproof footwear, particularly after heavy rain.
Yes, there are several easy circular options. For a gentle exploration, consider the River Feshie at Feshiebridge – Feshiebridge Stone Arch Bridge loop, which is rated as easy and offers lovely riverside views. Another moderate circular option is the Loch Insh – Loch Insh loop from Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Learning.
The Cairngorms National Park, where Loch Einich is located, offers stunning scenery year-round. However, for family walks, late spring to early autumn (May to October) generally provides the most favorable weather conditions, with longer daylight hours and less chance of snow or ice. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly.
The pristine environment of Loch Einich is excellent for wildlife observation. You might spot various birds like dippers, greenshank, common sandpipers along the shores, and snipe, mallard, red grouse, teal, and meadow pipit in the bogland. Whooper swans and greylag geese are also found on the water. The loch itself is home to brown trout and Arctic charr.
Absolutely! The region is known for its dramatic mountain scenery, with the loch nestled in a glacial trough flanked by imposing peaks like Sgòr Gaoith to the west and the Moine Mhòr plateau to the east. The loch itself is a remote, high-altitude body of water noted for its amazing clarity. Many trails offer panoramic views of the surrounding Munros and the deep Glen Einich valley.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 760 ratings. The clear waters of Loch Einich and the dramatic mountain backdrops are frequently highlighted.
Yes, for families looking for a bit more of a challenge with rewarding views, the View of Uath Lochans – View of Lochan Uaine loop from Feshiebridge is a moderate option that takes you through beautiful scenery. Another great choice is the River Feshie at Feshiebridge – Loch Insh Viewpoint loop, offering lovely vistas.
While Loch Einich itself is quite remote, some starting points for trails in the wider area, particularly those closer to villages like Feshiebridge or Aviemore, may be accessible by local bus services. However, direct public transport to the most remote trailheads for Loch Einich is limited. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for the Cairngorms National Park if you plan to rely on public transport.
Given the varied terrain and changeable Scottish weather, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Pack waterproof and windproof layers, sturdy hiking boots (preferably waterproof), plenty of water, snacks, a map and compass (or a fully charged GPS device), and a first-aid kit. Sun protection is also important, even on cloudy days. For families, consider extra layers for children, and perhaps a small backpack for each child to carry their own essentials.
The remote nature of Loch Einich means phone signal can be intermittent, so don't rely solely on mobile devices for navigation or emergencies. Always inform someone of your route and expected return time. Be aware of potential river crossings, which can be challenging after heavy rain. Stick to marked paths where possible, and supervise children closely, especially near water or on rocky sections. Weather conditions can change quickly, so be prepared for all eventualities.
