The Palazzo Pretorio, or Palazzo Vescovile, is the former bishop's residence of Trento. It represents a significant architectural ensemble comprised of three clearly defined structures: the Palazzo itself, the Torre di Piazza (also known as the Torre Civica), and the Castelletto to the south. The Palazzo Pretorio now houses the renowned Diocesan Museum (Museo Diocesano Tridentino), commemorating the famous Council of Trento. Built in 1220 by Bishop Friedrich von Wangen, it served not only as the bishop's seat of Trento but also as the town hall, mayor's office, and court. Originally, the city tower represented the keep of the Palazzo Pretorio. It was built before the 11th century and has been heightened several times. In 1602, Georg Fugger commissioned the Brescia-born architect Pietro Maria Bagnadore (1550-1619) to build a magnificent three-story palace on the Via Lunga, then located on the banks of the Adige River. Aptly, it was popularly known as the "Palazzo del Diavolo" (Devil's Palace); legend had it that the devil had built the palace in a single night and that Georg Fugger had sold him his soul in return. Those familiar with Georg Fugger's alchemical leanings already knew that "il palazzo fosse teatro di operazioni diaboliche" (the palace would be a theater of devilish operations). In 1642, the palace passed into the possession of Matthias Gallas, commander-in-chief of Ferdinand II's army. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who stayed overnight in Trento in 1786, remarked that the palazzo was "the only building of good taste" he had seen in Trento. The Neptune Fountain in Piazza Duomo, Trento, was built between 1767 and 1769 according to a design by the architect Francesco Antonio Giongo from Lavarone. It originally featured a lead statue, which was badly damaged by weathering and had to be replaced with a bronze figure in the 20th century. The current Neptune statue is a 1945 copy, while the original is kept in the Museo Diocesano Tridentino. Besides its function as a prestigious ornament, the fountain also served as a water source for many years. For cyclists, a stop here is particularly worthwhile, as Piazza Duomo, with the Cathedral of San Vigilio, the surrounding palaces, and the magnificent Neptune Fountain, offers a unique glimpse into the history and atmosphere of Trento's historic center.
