The Winterdijk is one of the oldest paths to and from Gouda. It was mentioned as early as 1359. The path is on the dike and was constructed to ensure that the reclaimed land behind the Gouwe would not be flooded during high tide. The Winterdijk was given this name because the highest water levels of a river are often reached in winter, making the dike necessary at that time. The dike was used as a footpath to the Brugweg in Waddinxveen. Halfway along the Winterdijk was a side path (the Uitweg) to the Kleiweg (Cley Wegh – now called Bloemendaalseweg). Bloemendaal’s weg still exist, the Uitweg is replaced by bike path.

The Turfmarkt is a canal in the city center of Gouda in the Dutch province of South Holland. The northwest side of the Turfmarkt stretches from Lage Gouwe in the west to Kleiweg in the east. The southeast side of the Turfmarkt stretches from Lage Gouwe to Blauwstraat. The northwest side, from Kleiweg to Vrouwensteeg, was formerly called Varkens-, Elzen-, or Eiermarkt. The names used refer to the sale of peat, alder wood, pigs, and eggs that used to take place here. The northwest side, from Vrouwensteeg to Vuilsteeg (now Lange Dwarsstraat), was called Hontscoop. The opposite southeast side was called Tevecoop (see fragment of map of Gouda in Kuyper's municipal atlas). The water of the Turfmarkt borders directly on that of the adjacent canal, the Gouwe, but is covered at Kleiweg.
