A very good hiking and cycling route runs along the Elbe dike at Grauer Ort. The beach area is perfect for a relaxing break. Benches are available on the dike, offering a wide view of the Elbe and the beach. Opposite this lovely spot is the historic Grauer Ort fortress. A visit here is also highly recommended and quite interesting 👍🏻.

The landing stage of the Grauer Ort fortress, on the Elbe River north of Stade, is one of the most outstanding historical military sites in Germany. It had already ceased to be a Prussian fortress by 1895 and was used as a mine depot from 1914 to 1945. A landing stage built into the Elbe in 1926 facilitated the smooth transport of goods to the facility. Until the end of World War II, ships were loaded directly onto ships at the riverbank via this stage. A narrow-gauge railway connected the depot to the mine. Despite its various functions, the fortress was never destroyed. From 1960 to 1985, the company Kaus & Steinhausen dismantled munitions here. The fortress subsequently fell into disrepair until a society took it over in 1997 and has been working to preserve it ever since. The listed monument is being gradually restored to its original condition and is being used for cultural events. In addition, railway enthusiasts operate a narrow-gauge railway. Visitors can ride on the track between the engine shed and the dike on the Elbe.
