Despite all the features due to the expansion to twice the length in the 18th century, the main impression of "Gamla Kyrka", the old church of Åre, remains that of a medieval stone church at the foot of Åreskutan. It is the only such structure in the mountains of Scandinavia. It was built by the farmers of Åre municipality at the end of the 12th century. They built their church near Lake Åre and the village of Totten. The pilgrim traffic towards Stiklestad and Nidaros (Trondheim) may also have been important for the building of the church. The church is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It offers space for 120 visitors.

For a long time, Stortorget served as a city market square. Today the traditional Gregorius market and the Storsjöyran town festival take place here every year.
