The current theatre is the result of the reconstruction in 1866 of a previous building built in 1824 and destroyed by fire. Of this building, only the arcades of the lower part of the façade remain, the difference in materials used being the reason for the presence of two distinct colour tones. Dedicated since the 20th century to the Savoyard actor and director Charles Dullin, the theatre has the Scène Nationale label with the Espace Malraux. The building has been partially registered and listed as a historic monument since 1984 and 1986 respectively. In addition, its proscenium curtain is also listed as part of French movable heritage.
