Tips from the Community

Peter
October 29, 2025, Frangokastello Castle

The name Frangokastello comes from a Venetian castle built in 1371 on a low peninsula, the crenellated outer walls of which still stand today. Above the south gate of the fortress, the coat of arms of the Venetian builders, the Lion of Saint Mark, is still well preserved. Inside the structure, however, only the foundations of the complex are visible. The castle, which was restored again by the Venetians under their commander Nicolo Dona in 1593, was later abandoned. Subsequently, the local inhabitants of Sfakio removed the beams from the towers and rooms.

Often fewer waves than at other beaches in the area. There are good tavernas right on the beach.

Beautiful section on the mountainside above the sea, sometimes like a rollercoaster. There is often sand in the curves

The center of Agia Galini consists of narrow alleys with numerous cafes, taverns and small shops and houses decorated with flower pots. The coastal section of Agia Galini consists of the harbor with the small harbor pier, which is surrounded by taverns. It is difficult to swim here, so there is a small path above the harbor (800 m.) that leads over a hill to the beach of Agia Galini. There is a riverbed between Agia Galini and the beach section. A small, nostalgic bridge leads over this stream to the beach. The watercourse dries up in midsummer.

There is a large parking lot at the harbor, which is practical but it is better to have it at your back if you want to enjoy the harbor. I thought it was really beautiful in the evening. The ideal time for me is April or May when there are not many people around.
