June 5, 2026, Altamont Wild Gardens

This is the wilder far end of the fabulous Altamont gardens on the banks of the River Slaney. The gardens feature an important collection of plants, laid out in a natural style.

Beautiful garden. You can also buy plants and pots. A small café is also available. The lake is reminiscent of a painting by Claude Monet.

The bridge itself is not as pretty as nearby Gorsebridge stone bridge, but the view from up on top is not bad at all.

There are plenty of places to get refreshments: next to the old stone bridge, or in the nearby town itself. A perfect stop when walking the Barrow Way.

Enjoy pleasant water views from this part of the Barrow Navigation, including plenty of wildlife that call this waterway home.

This is a scenic bridge across the beautiful River Barrow, a fine sight on both the Barrow Way and South Leinster Way long-distance trails. The river here marks the border between Counties Kilkenny and Carlow.

A cozy pub in Borris. You can also stay overnight there. We stayed there on our long-distance hike from Ireland to Switzerland and can highly recommend Joyce's Pub.
