Riserva dello Zingaro, Mezza Costa trail and return from Coastal Path

16.0km

690m

Embark on a challenging hike through Sicily's Riserva dello Zingaro, combining the Mezza Costa trail with a return along the Coastal Path. This difficult route covers 10.0 miles (16.0 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2271 feet (692 metres), typically taking around 5 hours and 31 minutes to complete. You will ascend into the mountains on the Mezza Costa trail, offering panoramic views of the dramatic coastline and lush Mediterranean vegetation, before descending to follow the sea. The terrain is rugged in places, requiring sure-footedness, but rewards you with a pristine natural environment free of cars and noise. You will pass by secluded coves like Cala Capreria and Cala dell'Uzzo, perfect for a refreshing swim.

This combined route is generally rated as difficult, so you should have very good fitness for the 5-and-a-half-hour journey. While the Coastal Path is easier, the Mezza Costa trail involves a substantial uphill climb. Be prepared for paths that can be rugged, especially if you visit during the hot summer months when shade is limited. Sturdy shoes are essential for navigating the varied terrain, which includes limestone and dolomite cliffs.

Riserva dello Zingaro holds historical significance as Sicily's first protected natural area, established in 1981 after local protests prevented a coastal road. This preservation effort means you will experience an authentic natural environment, home to over 650 plant species and around 40 species of nesting birds. Along the Mezza Costa path, you can also spot well-preserved rural buildings, offering a glimpse into the region's past.

The entire national park is permanently closed due to devastating forest fires in autumn 2025! The entrance is guarded; no entry is possible.

Must visit. Unspoiled place, beautiful beaches. I recommend walking shoes and lots of water in summer!

The entrance from the South to the Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro is guaranteed by a car and camper parking lot (small ones...), ticket office and small refreshment point where you can make the last refueling before entering the reserve. After the ticket office you will no longer find toilets and points of purchase of food or drinks so make sure you do it before starting the excursion. The point of no return is physically identified by an unfinished tunnel that is a symbol of the history of this nature reserve. In fact, in detail it is a symbol of the civil protest that about 3000 people started in 1980 preventing the start of the road connection works between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo. Thanks to this peaceful rebellion, the process of establishing the first nature reserve of the Sicily Region was set in motion. Some photos that I post describe its history.

What kind of terrain can we expect on family hikes in Trapani?

The Trapani region offers a diverse range of terrains perfect for families. You can find coastal paths with breathtaking sea views, trails through lush Mediterranean scrub, and even flat, accessible walks around unique environments like the Trapani Salt Flats. For very young children, look for shorter, easy routes with minimal elevation gain, often found near urban parks or coastal promenades.

What is the best time of year for family hiking in Trapani?

The best time for family hiking in Trapani is typically spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is pleasantly mild, and the landscapes are vibrant.
