For all railway enthusiasts: In Lathen (Emsland), an old steam locomotive has stood as a memorial since 1977, commemorating the long-gone narrow-gauge railway between Lathen and Werlte. The locomotive is nicknamed "Pingel Anton." Although it didn't run on this line, its design resembles the engines that once steamed along here. The memorial locomotive originally came from Donawitz, a town on the Hungarian-Austrian border.

The church was mentioned in connection with Corvey as early as the 9th century, a fact also commemorated by the patronage of St. Vitus. From 1528 to 1531, the previous building was demolished, and a new nave with three bays and a three-eighths-ended choir, which were not aligned, were built. In 1881–1882, the old church tower and sacristy were demolished. A new tower, two side chapels, and two sacristies were built. Four church bells hang in the tower: the two oldest date from 1652 and 1728, and the two younger ones from 1922, as their predecessors were melted down during the First World War. Because the church was too small, the hall church was expanded in 1957 by adding two side aisles to create the hall church it now houses. In 1987, the interior was completely redesigned and covered with a star vault, which begins on consoles. The frescoes dating from 1531 on the choir vault have been uncovered. They depict the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, the Crowning with Thorns, John the Baptist, and Saint Vitus, the patron saint of the church. A tabernacle dates from the late 15th century, and a depiction of St. Anne and the Three Virgins dates from the early 16th century. The baptismal font, made of Bentheim sandstone, stands on a Gothic pedestal. The statue of Mary Lamenting Christ was created by Thomas Simon Jöllemann in the early 18th century. The organ, with 24 stops distributed over two manuals and a pedal, was built by the Kreienbrink organ builders in 1971.
